West Springfield K-9 Team

Earlier this year the West Springfield Police Department and the Town of West Springfield mourned the loss of K-9 Donn. In an effort to keep the program moving forward K-9 Officer Mark Cote perused another K-9 for the department.

We would like to introduce you to Rado our newest member of our K-9 team. Rado is a 15 month old German Shepherd; he has been narcotics trained and will have continued training for area searches, evidence recovery, and suspect apprehension.

Rado's handler, John McCarthy, has worked for the West Springfield Police Department for 2 1/2 years and is now stepping up to a new role for the department. Officer McCarthy is currently a Staff Sergeant in the Massachusetts Army National Guard. Officer McCarthy has honorably served his country since 2009 with two tours in Operation Enduring Freedom.

Mayor Reichelt of West Springfield commends the work of Officer Cote and Officer McCarthy and supports the promotion of Officer McCarthy saying "Between his experience in the US Army and his strong work ethic for the West Springfield Police Department, I am extremely confident in his ability and impressed at his willingness to take on a new role."

Previously Officer Mark Cote was a K-9 officer for 16+ years and is looking forward to seeing the program continue. "Speaking for the whole department I am thankful and appreciate the work that Officer Mark Cote and his canines have provided for the Town of West Springfield. I know that he will continue to work with Officer McCarthy to ensure we have the best possible K-9 team going forward. Congratulations to both officers." said West Springfield Police Chief Robert Duffy

We wish them the best of luck in their training and to always stay safe.
