Kings Highway Control Valve Project
Traffic Alert: To Begin March 31
West Springfield, MA: The West Springfield Department of Public Works (“DPW”) Water Division will be replacing a critical water pressure control valve at the intersection of Kings Highway and Elm Street in the coming weeks. This necessary infrastructure improvement will take place from March 31 through April 25, and will involve temporary traffic detours in the area.
Residents and drivers should anticipate delays and detours during the project. The area impacted will be the portion of Kings Highway between City View Avenue and Elm Street. Only local traffic will be permitted in the affected area. Commuters and through traffic are strongly encouraged to seek alternate routes to minimize congestion and disruptions.
This project is a critical improvement to the Town’s drinking water distribution system. The existing control valve, originally installed in the 1950s, has reached the end of its service life and can no longer be repaired. This project will ensure better water pressure regulation for the low-elevation southeast section of West Springfield, ultimately enhancing service reliability and water system efficiency for residents.
Motorists should follow posted detour signs and check local updates to plan their travel accordingly. The DPW urges all drivers to exercise caution in work zones, obey traffic signage, and remain patient as crews work diligently to complete this vital infrastructure upgrade.
“Maintaining and upgrading our Town’s infrastructure is essential to ensuring long-term reliability and quality of service for our residents,” commented Mayor Reichelt. “ While we understand that road closures and detours can be inconvenient, we appreciate the community’s patience and cooperation as we complete this critical work.”
