West Springfield, MA:  The Town of West Springfield is excited to announce upcoming renovations and upgrades to the West Springfield Senior Center’s kitchen, aimed at upgrading the facility to allow the Council on Aging to resume in-house meal preparation. Construction is set to begin on February 20, 2025, with an expected completion date of March 7, 2025.

The renovation project will bring the kitchen up to full working condition with the installation of several new appliances and essential equipment. The upgrades will include a new oven, convection oven, dishwasher, warming box, steamer, and various other equipment and tools to support meal preparation. Additionally, a new grease trap will be installed, and the compressor in the walk-in freezer will be replaced to enhance efficiency and food storage reliability.  These improvements will allow the Council on Aging to resume in-house meal preparation, eliminating the need to receive meals from an external vendor.

Despite the construction, meal services will continue without interruption. The Meals on Wheels program will operate as scheduled, ensuring that homebound seniors receive their meals on time. For those dining at the Senior Center, meals will be provided in packaged, trayed servings, allowing patrons to either eat on-site or take their meals home for convenience.

“We are thrilled to be making these much-needed upgrades to our kitchen, which will greatly improve our ability to serve the community,” said Laurie Gearing, Director of the West Springfield Council on Aging. “By resuming in-house meal preparation, we can ensure fresher, higher-quality meals for our seniors while better addressing their dietary needs. We appreciate everyone’s patience and support during this renovation period.”

Mayor Reichelt also praised the efforts of the Council on Aging, stating, “I commend Director Gearing for her dedication and leadership in pursuing this important project. These kitchen renovations will have a lasting impact on our senior community, ensuring they continue to receive high-quality meals in a welcoming environment.”

The West Springfield Council on Aging remains committed to supporting the health and well-being of the town’s maturing residents through essential services and programs. For more information, please contact the West Springfield Council on Aging.
